Weobley win their first two games

(published by: Weobley and District Bowling Club)

Weobley Bowling Club have made a positive start to their 70th Anniversary season by winning their first two matches.

"We beat Ledbury in our first game and then followed it up with a solid win over Wellington to record our first Tarmac League victory" said Captain Tony Stokes.

"We gained 14 points winning three of the rinks, but it is early days with a lot of tough League games ahead" added Stokes.

Meanwhile, Weobley have been voted to have the best bowling green in the County having taken over from St Martins who finished runners up, with Hereford in third place.

"It's a great credit to our members and contractors Avonmore who have worked tirelessly to keep the green in good shape" said Stokes.

The offer of free membership remains open to people interested in taking up bowling for the first time.

Our club night is on Fridays and anyone interested is invited to come along from 6 pm on wards.

Today (Sunday) Weobley are in action again at Hay-on-Wye.

Weobley and District Bowling Club launch their 70th Anniversary season with a friendly game at Ledbury on Thursday 20th April.

The club was formed in 1947 for villagers who had returned from the Second World War at the Red Lion, before moving to their new green on Hereford Road in 2009.

"We have been successful in attracting several people who want to take up bowling, and will join the club under our policy of free membership for the first season following the story in the Hereford Times and The Magpie" said secretary Jean Bufton.

"The scheme is still open to anyone who wishes to take up the sport. Those interested in taking up bowls are invited to come along to our Friday club night throughout the season, starting on Friday 21st April at 6 pm."

Weobley has a full fixture list of over fifty matches, including a visit of Friends of Bowls England who will celebrate the 70th Anniversary with members on the 13th September.
